OUR COMMITMENT TO CONSERVATION

At Harring Doors we understand the importance of our environment and our responsibility for conserving our natural resources. Being a leader in the wood Stile and Rail Door industry necessitates a commitment to providing products that are not only environmentally friendly, but products that are assured to be sustainable. This assurance is obtained through certification by SmartWood, an independent third party certification program of the Rainforest Alliance, that our products meet the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) principles and criteria. The FSC is a voluntary market mechanism through which forests are certified against a strict set of environmental and social standards (Forest Management Certification) and all producers and manufacturers along the supply chain are certified to ensure that the final product bearing the FSC logo actually originated from a certified forest.

FSC certification also ensures contributions to points under the United States Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Rating System. The USGBC is a national, non-profit organization that promotes the design, construction, and operation of buildings that are environmentally responsible, profitable and healthy places to live and work.

The USGBC developed the LEED rating system in response to the U.S. market’s demand for a definition of “green building”). The LEED rating system is a standard that establishes the “green building” definition for all aspects of the construction process. The first LEED rating system was released in 2000 as LEED v2.0. In 2004, LEED-NC 2.1 was released and as of January 1, 2006, all new construction projects must be registered under LEED-NC 2.2

LEED is divided into 6 categories. Each category has a list of credits and the number of points available if the criterion for each credit has been achieved. (See attached) Individual products can only contribute to the points available for each credit. No LEED points are awarded for Harring’s individual contribution. LEED points are awarded based on the sum of all product contributions.

In the LEED rating system, there are only two categories that pertain to wood doors; Materials and Resources (MR) and Indoor Environmental Quality (EQ). The following is a list of LEED credit contributions available from Harring Doors, followed by a description of each credit and how Harring Doors contributes to that point.

LEED CREDIT DESCRIPTIONS

MR Credit 4.1: Recycled Content: 10% (post-consumer + ½ pre-consumer)

Requirements

Use materials with recycled content such that the sum of post-consumer recycled content plus ½ of the pre-consumer content constitutes at least 10% (based on cost) of the total value of materials in the project.

The recycled content value of a material assembly shall be determined by weight. The recycled fraction of the assembly is then multiplied by the cost of the assembly to determine the recycled content value.

What does this mean to Harring?

Particleboard and MDF contain 100% pre-consumer recycled content. Therefore, the percentage of recycled material (by weight) in our doors, times the final price to the end user can contribute towards the 10% requirement for this credit.

MR Credit 4.2: Recycled Content: 20% (post-consumer + ½ pre-consumer)

Requirements

Harring’s contribution is the same whether it is applied to MR 4.1 and is included in the 10% requirement or if it is applied to MR 4.2 and is included in the 20% requirement. (see MR4.1)

MR Credit 5.1: Regional Materials: 10% Extracted, Processed & Manufactured Regionally

Requirements

Use Building materials or products that have been extracted, harvested or recovered, as well as manufactured, within 500 miles of the project site for a minimum of 10% (based on cost) of the total materials value. If only a fraction of a product or material is extracted/harvested/recovered and manufactured locally, then only that percentage (by weight) shall contribute to the regional value

What does this mean to Harring?

Jobsites that are located between the intersection of the 500 mile radii from our plant and the Lumber or LSL origination will qualify for contribution based on the percentage of the door that is made of lumber or LSL from this area. The percentage is then multiplied by the cost of the door to get the total regional value.

Red Oak Poplar Soft Maple Basswood

Cherry Hard Maple Ash White Oak

MR Credit 5.2: Regional Materials: 20% Extracted, Processed & Manufactured Regionally

Requirements

Use Building materials or products that have been extracted, harvested or recovered, as well as manufactured, within 500 miles of the project site for an additional 10% beyond MR Credit 5.1 (total of 20% based on cost) of the total materials value. If only a fraction of a product or material is extracted/harvested/recovered and manufactured locally, then only that percentage (by weight) shall contribute to the regional value.

What does this mean to Harring?

Harring’s contribution is the same whether it is applied to MR 5.1 and is included in the 10% requirement or if it is applied to MR 5.2 and is included in the 20% requirement. (see MR 5.1)

MR Credit 6: Rapidly Renewable Materials

Requirements

Use rapidly renewable building materials and products (made from plants that are typically harvested within a ten-year cycle or shorter) for 2.5% of the total value of all building materials used in the project, based on cost.

What does this mean to Harring?

Materials that contribute to this point are: bamboo, wool, cotton insulation, agrifiber, linoleum, wheatboard, strawboard and cork. Harring Doors does not use any of these materials in the manufacture of doors and therefore Harring Doors does not contribute to this point.

MR Credit 7: Certified Wood

Requirements

Use a minimum of 50% (based on cost) of wood-based materials and products, which are certified in accordance with the Forest Stewardship Council’s (FSC) Principles and Criteria, for wood building components. These components include but are not limited to, structural framing and general dimensional framing, flooring, sub-flooring, wood doors and finishes.

What does this mean to Harring?

Harring Doors can contribute to this point as we are certified in accordance with the FSC’s Principles and Criteria for all doors and frames manufactured with controlled wood species.

EQ Credit 4.4: Low-Emitting Materials: Composite Wood & Agrifiber Products

Requirements

Composite wood and agrifiber products used on the interior of the building (defined as inside of the weatherproofing system) shall contain no added urea-formaldehyde resins. Laminating adhesives used to fabricate on-site and shop-applied composite wood and agrifiber assemblies shall contain no added urea-formaldehyde resins.

Composite wood and agrifiber products are defined as: particleboard, medium density fiberboard (MDF), plywood, wheatboard, strawboard, panel substrates and door cores.

What does this mean to Harring?

Harring Doors can contribute to this credit by using the above referenced materials that contain no urea-formaldehyde:
